WASHINGTON MBUKA

Hi, I’m Washinton Mbuka “23” and I’m an oil painter. As a kid I was so full of dreams and art was one of them. I realized I could draw when I was 8 and drew a lot as a hobby.

At school, everyone told me I knew how to draw and that made me believe I was good at it. Every time a teacher would ask for a volunteer to draw a  demonstration diagram for the class everyone mentioned my name and that’s how I  grew my drawing skills without my knowledge.

I remember days when I would carry home with me other students’ books to draw diagrams for them and that would sometimes put me in trouble with my parents as they felt I used to spend a  lot of time on drawing than my school work. After my primary education my dad  insisted that I should join an art school to expand my knowledge in art and in 2014  I joined Malava High School where I studied art as a subject.

At Malava High School  I was privileged to learn art under Mr Isiah Muchanja who believed in me and commented so highly about my work. Mr. Muchanja would talk so highly about my work in front of my seniors and that made me work so hard on my art because I  didn’t want to let him down, for that reason I regard him as my father in art.

In 2019, I joined Kenyatta University where I pursued fine art and design and it was around that time when art started making so much sense to me that I decided to go hard on it.

Most of my paintings revolve around wildlife which was my obsession as a kid. From wildlife documentaries, I draw inspiration from what I see around me every day. It helps me spend time with myself and meditate and that’s how I feel at peace.
